How to Help Children Feel Confident Starting Primary School with Green BeanAs the summer holidays draw to a close, many children are preparing to go back to school, or will be starting school for the first time. Starting school is a big step for young children. The transition from preschool to primary school can bring up many fears and uncertainties which may be expressed through changes in children’s behaviour, sleep problems, or increased emotional issues leading up to the new term. Whether your child is starting primary school for the first time, or moving up to a new class, it can be daunting knowing how best to support them. The Green Bean Collection includes a range of fun, educational books, toys and games to help children transition to school with ease. Our range has been created in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) set out by the government to help children develop and thrive. The books in the Green Bean Collection enable children to develop key skills in communication, reading, writing, maths, and creativity, preparing them for formal education. Green Bean’s Numbers supports children to recognise numbers and develop their counting skills through observational learning. Each number comes with isolated objects to help reinforce children’s learning and understanding. Green Bean’s Colours teaches children to recognise different colours with bold and vibrant illustrations which stimulate the imagination and help children to understand the world around them. Green Bean’s Shapes introduces young children to a range of shapes, supporting their spatial awareness, pattern recognition, communication, mathematics, and creativity. Learning the alphabet is a fundamental part of developing children’s reading and writing. With Green Bean’s Alphabet, your child will develop their written and verbal communication skills, giving them a great foundation for their early education and the classroom environment. To further kickstart your child’s reading, writing, and creative skills you can explore our Kids’ Club and download our fun activity sheets, with arts and crafts, colouring, and educational activities supporting KS1 and KS2 aged children. If your child is already at primary school and is moving up a year, our early reader paperback books are great for helping them to practise reading independently. They are also ideal for snuggling up at bedtime to read aloud or doing shared reading with your child to support their reading journey. Our early readers include Green Bean at the Pool, Green Bean at the Park, and Green Bean’s Bedtime. These engaging stories are fun and stimulating to help broaden children’s vocabulary and encourage reading for pleasure from a young age. With 20+ years of child development experience at Green Bean Studios, we have some top tips to help your child feel confident about their new learning adventures at school: 1, Set firm foundations for learning As well as helping your child to secure the basics of literacy and numeracy using the Green Bean Collection books and activity sheets, reading books with them daily is a surefire way to help them thrive. The best way to encourage children to love reading from a young age is by reading books with them daily – even if you can only manage five to ten minutes at bedtime, this will help nurture their love of books and develop their reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. 2, Stay connected One of the biggest causes for anxiety in children starting primary school is the thought of being separated from their parents or caregivers in an unfamiliar environment. By regularly nurturing a connection with your child leading up to starting school and during their first weeks and months, it can help reduce separation anxiety and ease them into the school environment. With parents’ attention being pulled in so many different directions, juggling work-life and childcare and everything in between, it can be hard to stay present with your child. Add exhaustion and screens into the mix, and it’s even more challenging to give your child what they desperately crave: your undivided attention. One of the reasons why children misbehave is because they don’t feel connected to their parents, which causes fears and uncertainties. Aim to spend some calm, quiet time away from screens with your child each day to build feelings of connection. Snuggling up and reading books is a great way to reassure your child and help them feel close to you. Again, this doesn’t have to be for a great length of time, but consistency is key – try and schedule in a daily slot that is screen-free (for both adults and children!) for simply being present together. 3, Read books about starting school The fear of the unknown is powerful. You can help ease this for your child by reading books about starting school with them. This will help them understand what to expect and process their fears by seeing themselves reflected in the book’s characters. Check out the Book Trust’s Seven Super Books for Starting School. 4, Get out in nature Outdoor play is essential to children’s mental health and wellbeing. Being out in nature has also been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels and boost your mood. Getting out of the house to your local park, forest, beach, or even just your garden, can be enough to help soothe your child’s anxieties. We hope you’ve found these tips for helping children who are starting school feel more confident and less anxious.
