Reading a wide variety of books brings many benefits for children, not only developing key skills but also supporting their wellbeing and building confidence. Accessing a range of books doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated – here’s our top tips for helping children love reading through book sharing.

1. Arrange a book swap
Buying new books can be costly. Why not arrange a book swap with your friends, school, or within your community? Encourage people to bring along books they wish to donate and then they can have the opportunity to take some new ones home for their little ones to enjoy without spending a penny!

2. Share stories
Whether it’s meeting up with their friends or spending time with siblings, get your child to share their favourite books with other children and show what makes these stories special to them.  Excitement for a favourite book can inspire other children to want to read it too and discover new stories that help them love reading.

3. Reading date
A reading date is ideal for children under 5 to meet and share a love of stories! Make it a special experience by laying out a blanket, spreading some books out, and then enjoying a reading tea party with some healthy snacks and drinks. Spend some time reading the stories out loud together and bring the joy of storytelling to life for little ones! ​

4. Create time to read together
Set some time aside each day – bedtime is ideal – where all devices are switched off and put away so you and your child can get cosy with a selection of books.
